Food Pen Pal Virgin

For a year, I watched people post about Foodie Pen Pals at The Lean Green Bean and I was intrigued. It was a cool concept; bloggers and non-bloggers are matched, emails are exchanged, and then packages of food related items are sent off by the 15th of the month. I love food. I love meeting people. I love getting packages in the mail. However, I didn't do it. I had previously tried another secret present thing via a blog, but I never received a gift. So, I started to get a nervous about this and put it off.

Finally, I  decided that I wanted to participate. On May 4, 2013, I signed up for my first Foodie Pen Pal experience. Immediately, the person (Mary at colleenshomecooking.com) that had me as a receiver contacted me for information on what I liked and disliked. I contacted my assigned person. I was excited and immediately got my package ready.

And then I got my package.

I devoured the Mini Peanut Butter and Mini Cheddar Crackers almost intantly.

Mary made me homemade mustard...yum!

And I got a little surprise added recipe.
My package included:

  • Late July Mini Peanut Butter and Cheddar Cheese Crackers from Massachusetts are YUMMY!
  • Homemade Brown and Yellow Mustard is made from Vidal Blanc Wine. I absolutely love this mustard and mustard in general. As soon as she said, "I make homemade mustard," I was sold.
  • Trappist Preserves made from Trappist Monks is such a great jelly for my PB&Js. I love their beer, so why not preserves.
  • Sunbutter Natural is sunflower seed butter. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to soon.
  • Equally Exchange Organize Chocolate Espresso Bean bar was great, but compared to everything else in the box, it was not my favorite. And I love love LOVE chocolate. So, for me to pick other things over the chocolate means that those other things are THAT good.
  • I can't go wrong with a recipe for roasting Cauliflower. I loved that touch.
I want to just say THANK YOU Mary at colleenshomecooking.com. You rock for my awesome foodie package. And go check out her blog.

For my first experience, I was impressed and can't wait to do it next month. Maybe you will be on my list.

  1. Preserves made FROM Trappist monks? Seems like the supply would be a bit limited...

    1. No, they just keep churning it out...I mean what else do they have to do besides chanting.

And was it the Virgin in the title that got you here?

  3. What a great box. I have been wanting to try sun butter, just haven't gotten around to it. Let me know what you think. And what a great touch including the recipe. I love reading other's posts and getting ideas for the next month.

I have to ask- how do you survive running in Houston?! It was 84% humidity this morning in Austin and I limped through a 6 mile run.

    1. I tried it finally and I loved it. I put it on a slice of bread before a run and then as a PB&J. So good. You should try it.

Running in Houston is hard. It was hotter for us yesterday morning. I went to a park where I know has water along the way and lots of shade. I went out on Friday morning and I think I got heat exhaustion. There was no shade and full on sun at 8 a.m. Tips: Shade, sun block, and early morning or late evening. I typically go running around 8 p.m. Also, another tip is to eat popsicles or those icee sticks things before the run. It cools the inner body temp.

  4. I'm glad you had a good experience. I was the same way wondering if I would actually receive anything. This was really fun and I'm sure I'll do it again as well.

    1. Well, I did a thing called Secret Pumpkin and never got my package. So, I was worried about this one. But my person contacted me immediately and got my package soon thereafter. I'm signing up again.

  5. It really is a great idea. They have one for UK and Europe, which means I think you can do it, too.
